Still life
Paintings/pictures of inanimate (not alive "Inanimate objects like stones") objects are called still life. The depiction of different shapes of different inert objects, in which the size, colour, form, hardness, softness, etc., whatever the properties of that object are, is called still life. Western artist Paul Cézanne was the first to start making still life. Showing flowers, leaves, trees, plants, jugs, fruits, glasses, cups, etc. in a painting is called still life painting. Most of these inanimate objects are shown. In a way, we can say that still life painting is used to depict dead things.
History
In the 15th century, the people of Egypt used to show their food items such as fish, grains, fruits, vegetables, and their daily use items through pictures, which was quite in vogue. Some such buildings were also built by them which were related to their everyday life.
Use of still life painting
This painting is actually used to depict stationary objects, but with time we get to see changes in the depiction and use of this art. Nowadays, it is being done to satisfy the desire of picture buyers, and living things are also being depicted in still life painting. Such as human figures, animals and birds, trees and plants, etc.

Still life paintings are actually those pictures which are inanimate or used in the daily life of human beings. स्टिल लाइफ (Still - life)
निर्जीव (Inanimate, इनानिमेट) वस्तु के चित्र को स्टिल लाइफ कहते हैं। विभिन्न जड़ वस्तुओं के भिन्न-भिन्न आकारों का चित्रण जिसमें उस वस्तु विशेष का आकार, रंग, रूप, कठोरता या कोमलता इत्यादि को जो भी उस वस्तु के गुण हों, सुसज्जित ढंग से चित्रण स्टील लाइफ कहलाता है। पाश्चात्य कलाकार पॉल सेजेंन ने सर्वप्रथम स्टिल-लाइफ बनाने की शुरुआत की। फूल, पत्तियो, पेड़-पौधे, सुराही, फल ,गिलास ,कप आदि वस्तुओ को पेंटिंग में दिखाना ही स्टिल लाइफ पेंटिंग कहलाता है। इनमे ज्यादातर निर्जीव वस्तुओ को ही दिखाया जाता है। एक प्रकार से हम कह सकते हैं की मृत वस्तुओ को दर्शाने के लिए स्टिल लाइफ पेंटिंग का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
इतिहास
लगभग 15वी शताब्दी में इजिप्ट (मिस्र) के लोगो के द्वारा अपने खाद्य पदार्थो जैसे:- मछली, अनाज, फल, सब्जी और उनकी रोज-मर्रा प्रयोग की जाने वाली वस्तुओ को चित्र के माध्यम से दिखाया जाता था जो की काफी प्रचलन में था। इनके द्वारा कुछ ऐसी इमारतों को भी बनाया गया जो इनकी रोज-मर्रा की जिंदगी से जुड़े हुए थे।
स्टिल लाइफ पेंटिंग का प्रयोग
इस पेंटिंग का प्रयोग वास्तव में स्थिर वस्तुओ या Objects को बनाने में किया जाता है लेकिन समय के साथ इस कला के चित्रण एवं प्रयोग में हमें बदलाव देखने को प्राप्त होता हैं। आजकल इसका चित्रण चित्र खरीदारों की इच्छा के साथ होने लगा हैं एवं इसमें सजीव वस्तुओ को भी स्टिल लाइफ पेंटिंग में दर्शाया जाने लगा है। जैसे मानव आकृतियां, पशु-पक्षी, पेड़-पौधे, आदि।
