'अस्मिता' शब्द -अर्थ एवं स्वरूप ('Asmita' -Meaning and Nature)
'अस्मिता' शब्द के व्युत्पत्तिपरक (Etymological) अर्थ के विषय में कई विद्वानों ने अपने मत दिए हैं-
वामन शिवराम आप्टे के अनुसार- 'अस्मिता' शब्द की निर्मिति अस्मि + तल् + टाप से हई है। जिसका अर्थ है- अहंकार।'
आदर्श हिन्दी शब्दकोश में भी 'अस्मिता' शब्द हेतु आत्मश्लाघा, (Self praise) अहंकार, मोह आदि अर्थ दिए गए हैं। 'अस्मि' शब्द अस् + मिन् से बना है। अस्मि अर्थात् मैं हूँ। अस्मि की भाववाचक संज्ञा 'अस्मिता' है। इस शब्द से स्वत्व (Ownership) का बोध होता है।'
यह एक ऐसा दायरा है जिसके तहत व्यक्ति एवं समुदाय यह बताते हैं कि वे खुद को क्या समझते हैं। अस्मिता का यह दायरा अपने आप में एक बौद्धिक, ऐतिहासिक एवं मनोवैज्ञानिक संरचना का रूप ले लेता है जिसकी रक्षा करने हेत व्यक्ति और समदाय किसी भी सीमा तक जा सकते हैं। "
उपर्युक्त अर्थों के आधार पर हम कह सकते हैं कि 'अस्मिता' शब्द जहाँ निजत्व (Privacy) का बोध करवाता है वहीं जीवन के अन्य पहलुओं से भी इसका संबंध रहता है जो समय-समय पर अपना रूप बदलते रहते हैं। व्यक्ति एवं समुदाय अस्मिता को प्राप्त करने के लिए संघर्षरत रहते हैं और अस्मिता के प्रति जागरूकता इन्हें दिशाहीन होने से बचाती है।
आधुनिक युग में व्यक्ति को अस्मिता प्राप्ति के लिए संघर्ष करना पड़ रहा है। आज के समय में अस्मिता के प्रश्न अधिक उलझे हुए हैं तथा उसको प्राप्त करना कठिन हो गया है।

Which means - ego. 'Ideal Hindi dictionary has also been given the meaning of self-sacrifice, (SELF Praise) for the word 'Asmita'. 'Asmi' is made up of as + min. I am there. The emotional noun is 'Asmita'.
This word is the realization of the self. ' This is a scope under which the person and the community explains what they consider themselves. This scope of Asmita takes the form of an intellectual, historical and psychological structure in itself, which can lead to any limit.
